Should the Cardinals Sign Malik Willis to Run LaFleur's System?

Decoded — Aug 15, 2026 — AzJace — 6 min

With the Cardinals hiring Mike LaFleur, the next step is to get him a quarterback who can run his system. Mike LaFleur's brother, Matt LaFleur in Green Bay, worked with a certain QB who is about to become a free agent in March. Both Mike and Matt come from the Shanahan/McVay coaching tree and influence.

That same QB just happened to have been drafted by the Tennessee Titans while Monti Ossenfort was the Director of Player Personnel in 2022. That QB is Malik Willis.

Willis coming out of college had a lot of the tools but needed time to develop. He's been sitting in Green Bay for 2 seasons as Jordan Love's backup, with a total of 4 seasons of experience in the league, and he'll be 26 years old coming into free agency.

Teams with a connection to Willis: the Packers are -$12M in cap space and can't trade or cut Love without it resulting in more negative cap space. Or the Miami Dolphins, since Jon-Eric Sullivan and Jeff Hafley were both hired from Green Bay — the Dolphins are -$37M in cap space.

The Cardinals have $30M in cap space prior to any trades or cuts, which can skyrocket to over $100M — a lot more than any other QB-needy team (Vikings -$53M, Browns -$36M). He's not going to be a top-10 cap hit at the position (Kyler Murray was #1 in '24, #5 in '25, and will be #8 in '26 among all positions).

I am aware this is a very limited sample size.

Should the Cardinals look to sign Malik Willis in free agency? We know the Cardinals have a decent track record of bringing in veteran quarterbacks. I'd be excited to see Malik Willis and Mike LaFleur. Let me know what you think!
